SLATIŇANY
Horses and stables, a flourishing English park, one of the best-equipped castles of the 19th century - all this can be found at Slatiňany Castle, just 15 kilometres from the Czech city of Pardubice.
There is a regular train service between Prague and Pardubice, just an hour’s drive away. You can also take the local electric train to Slatiňany station.
The most famous owners of Slatiňany Castle were the Auerspergs, a princely family who stayed out of politics and ran their own household.
They owned the castle from 1746 to 1942 and were true aristocrats. The Auerspergs often came here in the summer to watch the horse races.
In 1894-1898 the Auersperg princes built huge new stables for 100 horses next to the castle.
Horses and Slatiňany Castle were inseparable, and the Auersperg family devoted all their leisure time to them. In 1947 the castle was turned into a horse museum.
There are many exhibitions in the castle that tell the story of horse breeding and the horse in art - paintings, porcelain, graphics and tapestries depicting horses.
